Bulletin #3
Engine Driven Refrigeration Compressor
Failures Caused By Loss Of Refrigerant
After two engine drive refrigeration compressor replacements, the boat owner was informed by the manufacturer that the failures were caused from refrigerant loss, Many boat refrigeration systems are not protected electrically from operating with low or no refrigerant. Systems with low-pressure switches will cycle repeatedly indicating loss of refrigerant.
A
few simple checks by the operator, the exposure to these types of failures
can by reduced. After startup of a system that has not been run for a while, a
functional test is necessary. The simplest and quickest check is to look and
feel the area where the refrigeration begins. If this area is not cold in two
to five minutes, the system is not functioning properly and lengthy continued
operation may cause a compressor failure.
