Over the past 20 years I've worked with thousands of  boat owners helping them select and maintain refrigeration systems for their boats. Over the years I have seen just about every boat refrigeration system available and the problems that can occur. Most of these problems could have been solved or prevented by the boat owner with just a little basic refrigeration know how.  The purpose of this site is to offer free information to the boat owner or anyone who is interested in installing or maintaining a boat refrigeration system. If you need more detailed information, we offer our Do-it-Yourself Boat Refrigeration book.

Any insulated box can be converted to a refrigerator or cooler by installing an evaporator in the box and connecting it to a compressor condensing unit. This large Igloo cooler with a one-inch full length holding plate has run 6 years with a 15-year-old air-cooled Adler/ Barbour condensing unit mounted 24 ft. away. Small coolers and medium temperature refrigeration conversions are within reach of most boaters, but making sure your selection is the right one for you is important. Production boats with iceboxes lack the required insulation necessary to convert them to a freezer. Therefore, if you desire a freezer, you will need to upgrade your insulation. The answers to these and other questions are in my book. Most manufacturers of equipment produce maintenance manuals and service bulletins, but this is not so with boat refrigeration. That's why I try to include everything that I have learned about boat refrigeration in my book/ manual.

NOTE: In attempt to help you find a specific item faster, we have installed the search engine below. Set it for "site" and then type in the item you are interested in. ex: compressors - All pages that contain compressors will appear. (the top few lines are ads - the price you pay for not writing your own script.)
